Body care and candle labels

Product labels are built from what actually went into the batch, so the ingredients and lot code are right for that lot. They print on 2" × 4" labels, 10 to a sheet.

Find it More → Product labels (or Product labels on a batch)

Steps

  1. Once, in Settings: add your Name on labels and your address under Address or cottage food registration number. Body care makers also fill in Where customers report a reaction: a web page or a US phone number.
  2. For body care, give each ingredient its INCI name on its material page, and on each recipe set what The law treats it as: True soap, Cosmetic or OTC drug.
  3. In Products, give each product a Net weight (g). For liquids, put the volume in Size instead, like “4 fl oz” or “120 ml”.
  4. Open Product labels (or Product labels on the batch) and choose the batch. If you make both body care and candles, pick Body care or Candle.
  5. If anything is missing, a note at the top says what and where to add it.
  6. Under How many of each, enter how many labels you need for each product. Check the preview.
  7. Tap Print labels (PDF).

What’s on a body care label

  • The product name and scent.
  • Net contents in US and metric units, like “Net wt 2.65 oz (75 g)”, with pounds and ounces too from a pound up. A size like “4 fl oz” prints fluid ounces and millilitres.
  • Ingredients by INCI name, heaviest first, from that batch. The same ingredient from two lots is listed once. In a split batch, each scent’s label lists the scent that went into it.
  • Your name and address, and where a customer can report a reaction (the contact MoCRA asks for).
  • The lot code and the date it was made.

Set as true soap (fats and lye, sold only to clean), the ingredient list is optional, but listing one is good practice and what buyers expect. Set as an OTC drug (antiperspirant, sunscreen, acne or antibacterial), Batchwell won’t print the label: drugs need a Drug Facts panel, so use a template made for them.

What’s on a candle label

  • The product name, scent and net weight in ounces and grams.
  • The safety alert symbol and the word WARNING, with: “Burn within sight. Keep away from things that catch fire. Keep away from children and pets.”
  • Burn directions, on by default: trim the wick to ¼", burn no longer than 4 hours, stop when ½" of wax remains. Untick Burn directions to leave them off.
  • An ingredient line, if you tick List what’s in it. It uses each material’s label name, like “Soy wax, fragrance, cotton wick”.
  • Your name and address, the lot code and the date made.

These are the safety elements of ASTM F2058 that retailers ask for. Put the label on the candle or its container, where a buyer sees it before buying.

Good to know

  • Product labels shows in More when you make body care or candles. Bakers use Food labels instead.
  • Words like “heals” or “treats” make a cosmetic a drug in the FDA’s eyes. Batchwell fills in the label from your records; what it claims is up to you.
  • You can print up to 200 of each product at a time.

Labels follow the rules as Batchwell understands them, but you’re responsible for what’s on your packaging. This isn’t legal advice.
